Child Welfare, Race, And Disparity: New Findings, New Opportunities (Webcast) (8:30 am - 9:30 am)

Racial disparity in the child welfare system is a pressing problem for policymakers, practitioners, and advocates. The fact that Black children enter foster care at higher rates than White children and remain in care longer is well established – but not so well understood. Efforts to understand and describe the Black/White placement gap have given rise to a new set of questions, which this Chapin Hall Child and Family Policy Forum will seek to address. Panelists will explore the relationships between social context – family structure, unemployment rates, and adult education levels – and the degree of racial disparity. Panelists will discuss where to go with investments intended to promote equity. A recording will be archived after the event on the Chapin Hall website.

Attend in person in Chicago (8:30-10:30 AM CT):

The Affordable Care Act And Implications For Families Affected By Substance Use Disorders In The Child Welfare System -Webinar (1:00 pm - 2:30 pm)

Putting the Pieces Together for Children and Families National Conference Webinar Series

The Affordable Care Act and Implications for Families Affected by Substance Use Disorders in the Child Welfare System

Presented by Suzanne Fields Senior Consultant, Technical Assitance Collaborative

Tuesday February 21, 2012

Health care reform, as envisioned under the Affordable Care Act, could have the most profound effect on access to health care services, including substance abuse and mental health services, since the implementation of Medicare almost 50 years ago. What are the implications of health care reform for families in the child welfare system with substance use disorders? How can substance abuse and mental health systems and providers take best advantage of new Medicaid eligibility, benefit design, parity and primary health integration efforts to affect access to treatment for parents in the child welfare system? This session will identify health care reform issues that can potentially impact families in the child welfare system, and opportunities to engage in the dialogue to inform policy at a state level.
